Hi, my name is Rachel, and I’m a Birth Junkie and a Breastfeeding Advocate.

I didn’t know this about myself until the birth of my first child in my mid 30’s. With the support of my amazing husband and my doula, I was able to have an incredibly positive journey into motherhood.  My son was born 2 hours after arriving at the hospital without interventions or medications. A dear friend welcomed her first baby 9 days after my son.  Our birth journeys couldn’t be more different, nor could our breastfeeding relationships. On a high from my own birthing, and seeing the contrast between our two experiences, I realized I had a calling in life to become a Childbirth Educator, a Doula and a Lactation Educator.  And so it began…

I earned my Certified Childbirth Educator (traditional childbirth education method) through the Childbirth Education Association of San Diego, a former Chapter of ICEA.  My certification was an intensive 9 months and required mentored teaching.  Upon completion of my CCE, I worked for CEA of San Diego, a non-profit organization until it closed.  I also teach at a local hospital as a Perinatal Educator and do continued education courses in my field every year. My traditional Childbirth Preparation background affirmed my personal belief in the necessity of teaching from evidence based research.

My lactation education was sparked by watching my dear friend, a loving, compassionate woman who struggled with breastfeeding for months. Through her perseverance and dedication, she was able to nurse for 6 months before transitioning her son solely to formula. Her experience was very different from my own and it taught me a great deal. I’m thankful for having learned these lessons early in my career. While her desire to nurse her son was the catalyst, it was the sisterhood of support and the knowledge she veraciously pursued which allowed her to successfully achieve her goal of breastfeeding as long as she did. This set me on the path to become a Certified Lactation Educator. My strong knowledge combined with my personal experiences make me an effective and understanding Breastfeeding Advocate. My combined breastfeeding experience with my 3 children is over 6 years.  As a mom who works full time, I cherish my nursing relationship with my kids and relish our time to reconnect after long hours apart.  Also as a nursing mom, I’m a pumping expert!  I have lots of tips and tricks that I’ve gleaned over the years.  I am a Certified Lactation Educator having completed the USCD Lactation Education course.

After completing my training, I settled into a career of teaching while being blessed to attend the occasional birth as a Doula. I thought I was just were I needed to be, until…

Somehow, the stresses of:

  • being a mom who works a full time job
  • teaches nights and weekends
  • occasionally doulas
  • is a wife
  • a mother of 3 small children

started to get to me.  Imagine that!  I began using hypnosis for stress management.  I had previously dabbled in meditation, but this was different. Hypnosis proved powerful and effective for me and once again I began re-evaluating.  What if you put Childbirth and Hypnosis together!  As I did research on Hypnosis for Childbirth, there were a number of things I would not comprise on, before I could dedicate myself to a program:

  1. It MUST provide COMPLETE evidence based Childbirth Education
  2. The program MUST be regularly updated to incorporate current research
  3. It MUST provide true Hypno-Anesthesia
  4. It MUST have a proven track record for success

My searching took me to many corners of the Internet, tons of forums, and multitudes of conversations with moms, doulas, midmives and educators.  In the end only one program satisfied all of my requirements.  And so, in 2011, I became a Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis Instructor and Hypnobabies Certified Hypno-Doula.

The incredible value of hypnosis continues to impress me.  In 2013, I completed an intensive Hypnotherapy training program and added Certified Hypnotherapist to my credentials.  It’s been an interesting journey, one I would not trade for anything, and one that I know is far from over!  I look forward to what the future brings!  Who knows, maybe I can add Hypno-Mom to my credentials.  🙂

Lastly, I couldn’t do what I do with the incredible support of the man that has the hardest job I know, my husband and stay at home dad to our 3 kids, Bob! Thank you honey.
